Holding On

I had expected my riding today to be limited to a trip up to Neve Shalom to help pack things up for the move to a new space. It didn't work out that way. When I got there I found the number of folks who turned up to lend a hand had exceeded expectations. This was good news for the project and meant instead of spending the afternoon packing up, I was able to leave after a couple of hours. When we finished packing up the books in the library I took off and wandered up to Creve Coeur Lake.

This was a tree outside Neve Shalom when I first arrived around noon.
There are still patches of color to be found but...

A couple hours later and a different location, it didn't look so colorful.
It is beginning to look more and more like winter is drawing near.

This pair of mallards apparently doesn't feel it is time to move on yet.

But, in most places it is looking pretty gray.

There are two trees just outside my garage that seem not to have gotten the memo about Autumn falling away.

They are gold and red...

...smooth, and...

...fuzzy.
Autumn is holding on here and there, but it doesn't appear it will holdout much longer.

  1. Beautiful pictures as always. You definitely have a great eye. Such beautiful colors and composition. Of course living in close proximity to such beauty helps.

    Thanks for sharing Keith.

    1. Missouri has been a surprise in terms of beauty. We have some many hiking trails. There are the Ozarks and the Mark Twain National Forest. I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of all that's here.

The color has been amazing this year. Folks said with the drought there wasn't going to be much. It has turned out just the opposite.

  2. So the trees didn't get the memo, eh? Good for them, they look beautiful.

    1. The remaining color is mostly on the ornamental trees in the the cities. When one gets out to the native growth the leaves are pretty much down. But, these trees are still putting on a show for me every morning.

    1. The weather is definitely becoming even more unpredictable than it used to be. But, I suspect you have your snow.

  4. I enjoyed your views, as always!

That's funny, it "didn't get the memo"...there's one in our area where I walk the dogs that didn't get the memo either!

I'm glad, though. I love to walk under a red or golden bough of autumn color.

    1. Deb,
Aren't these colorful holdouts wonderful? Truly a delight.

  5. Our Autumn has been underwhelming here. The trees are shifting in dribs and drabs. And some are going right to brown or leafless. But we do have bright pockets of unbelieveable color every so often.

    1. I think that's what everyone expected would happen here, but then we got a rain a just the right time and we haven't had any storms to knock the leaves off. But, now if you get outside the Cities, it is pretty gray.

  6. Nice pictures. We don't get those colors in Texas. Leaves tend to turn from green to brown/burnt overnight.

    1. Welcome! I lived in Oklahoma and that was pretty much what happened there. There were two seasons: Green and Brown.

Thanks for stopping by and I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

  7. I think our trees must be the ones sending out the memos as not a leaf to be found still clinging and not even a hint of green to be seen. Right now, folks are moaning about not enough snow....

    1. Yes, you live in a much different world than I do here. I so appreciate you giving me a window onto that world. Thanks again for your blog and thanks for stopping by.

  8. Keith - our seasons here are completely mixed up, we are getting October weather in November and it should be cold and frosty. We still have a significant amount of green on the some trees. It doesn't bode well for January, February, or March - that is when we will get winter, or at least what it has been seeming like for the last few years.

    1. Dar,
Martha over at Living Among Tourists http://livingamongtourists.blogspot.com/ has said, "There are no seasons now. It is just a day and a month. If it gets cold and snows, it's a cold snowy day. Or several days." I guess that is going to be the way of it for at least as long as I'm on the planet.
