Goodbye July

The headline in the newspaper said it all: It's official this was the hottest July since records have been kept. (Click here to read the article)

Back in the Spring this was a pond. I saw a turtle sunning itself on this log.

The wetlands are drying up.

The lakes and rivers are very low.

This blue heron wasn't complaining.

Nor was this great white.

We did get some rain on the last Sunday of July.

It was wonderful even if it was only just a little.

August is usually hotter here than July, but who can say what this year will bring. We can only wait and see.

  1. And we have yet to hit the 90s F (officially) here in Western Oregon. Unofficially some locales have hit 90. The weather sure has been odd these last couple of years. Last summer we didn't even bother with AC.

May you have an unseasonably cool August (just cool enough to enjoy!)

    1. Kari,
A cooler than normal August would be welcome and unexpected. I think part of the problem is we've had two mild summers in a row. The last couple of summers people were making fun of global warming. Not this summer.

  2. And we had probably the coldest June/July since the beginning of weather record for BC. We haven't seen really hot temperatures here this year. But there are some chances that August will be the real deal.

    1. Sonja,
I hope you have a "real deal" August. I suspect we will have our normal hot & humid August. It is starting out that way. At least we are getting some rain.

  3. We haven't had any great fabulous warm weather here. It seems to stay in the teens, usually around 18 or 19 Celsius. It is nice, but just not warm, its cold at night. I am hoping that August will bring summer in earnest here. I do hope you get a little rain and some decent temperatures that don't have you sweltering.

    1. Dar,
The rain would be a good thing even though it is probably too late for the crops. At least this is when were are supposed to be sweltering. I guess that makes it a little easier to take. The a/c bills I'm sure are going to be chilling.

  4. They are advertising "back to school" on the radio and TV and last night I heard those "end of summer" sounding insects out in the woods.

    Where did the summer go?

I played golf weekly from January through June. Hid in the house from blistering heat ever since up to this week.

    That's just "not right"!

    1. Deb,
I think you hit on something. It seems it has been summer here since March. The weather has been just wacky.

On the back to school thing--school starts so early now. I guess I'm old. I can't wrap my mind around school starting before September. Oh well.

I hope your blistering heat moves on and you get in some golf before winter descends upon us.

  5. All anyone can do is sit back, enjoy the rain and say "OK! Now what?" I hope your August is not as wicked as the beginning of summer. And conversations can change from how horribly miserable it is to how wonderfully cool and pretty it is. Nice to think about, isn't it.

  6. Our July officially ended up just shy of last July, so in effect we have had two crazy July's in a row. I mean, Wow, when it is still 96 degrees at 10:00 pm, it gets a little old. Glad you at least got a little rain. We've had some spotty stuff around, but never seems to quite get to us.

    1. Jim,
Our last year wasn't so brutal. And, the summer before was incredibly nice. Truthfully, I don't remember last August being so bad, but that could be a trick my mind is playing on me. I'm expecting hot and humid, but hoping for mild. We will see.

  7. You had the hottest July and we had the wettest June in 100 years. Go figure what is up with our weather. Climate change is upon us.

Sure hope the temps cool down for you. And hopefully you'll get some more rain.

Yes, climate change is upon us. I'm afraid we are going to have very erratic weather for the rest of our lifetimes...at least mine.

NOPE ! NO heat here. only 12°C at night so it is chilly. We have not had any HEAT this year, YET. They say it is coming, forecast for high 80's this weekend but It may not happen. We have had the worst rain in 100 years, we don't know what the sun feels like

If I could send you some of our sun and heat I surely would. I hope "They" are right and sun and warm is coming your way.

  9. Keith,

I share the misery. Kansas has been hot, as they say, as hell. The gates of hell, anyway, I assume they save the real fancy stuff for inside (gotta keep something for the paying guests after all.) You must have gotten the rain after we did. I hope Missouri isn't as tragic as Kansas seems these days. A few more summers like this one and we're this won't be farm country anymore. Sad.

    1. Brady,
Here many of the corn fields just look like giant dried out grass. There are acres and acres of brown. I don't know how tragic Kansas is, but I hear it is pretty bad for Missouri farmers. When I get my new ride, I'm hoping to get a bigger view of what's happening. I do certainly have a much better appreciation for what the "Dust Bowl" times were like. A local forecaster has taken to calling us the Midwestern Desert. A bit overly dramatic, but still makes a point.

  10. I sure hope your August isn't worse. But I do know that our August and first two weeks of Sept can really suck!!

    1. Lori,
Yep, we share hot & humid Augusts. Often it breaks a little earlier for us--that being farther north thing. I'm certainly hoping we don't have a sucky August, but I'm expecting it. We are in the grips of climate change, so who knows? Could be paradise...yeah, right.
